Members of the Murray County Rescue Squad were called Tuesday afternoon to aid in the search of a missing Ellijay man, 68 year old Earl “Tater” Townsend.

According to reports from the Times Courier in Ellijay, Townsend lives in the Ridgeway Church Road community and was reported missing Sunday night around 8 p.m.

Rescue groups from Gilmer County as well as Fannin and Pickens counties have been searching for the man in the area of Carters Lake near the Murray County line.

K-9 units have been used as well as a helicopter from the Georgia State Patrol.

Townsend suffers health problems, among them, dimentia. Authorities do not believe there is anything suspicious about his disappearance. They believe he may simply have wondered off.

Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities.

Townsend was wearing a blue shirt, black pants and black shoes when he was last seen. Townsend is about 175 pounds and is 5 foot 3 inches tall.

Officials were concerned because of the high temperatures and humidity the last couple of days.
