Murray County Commissioner Brittany Pittman is encouraging all local residents to take advantage of the 17th Annual Amnesty Day at the Murray County Landfill April 26th.

Unlike regular Saturdays, the landfill will extend its hours from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. in order to give Murray County residents extra time to collect and dispose of trash and debris around their homes and neighborhoods at no cost. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the return of Spring than by sprucing up our neighborhoods and giving our community an environmental face lift,” Pittman said. “The annual Amnesty Day gives Murray County residents the perfect opportunity to dispose of litter and debris at no cost to them.”

The event is limited to Murray County homeowners. No commercial or agri-business waste will be accepted. Residents can also dispose of up to 10 regular car tires free of charge as part of the event.

Last year, more than 930 residents disposed of 325 tons of waste including 2,574 scrap tires, 300 gallons of waste oil, two tons of metal, one ton of brush, as 12 lead-acid batteries. Based on the landfill’s standard gate rate, residents disposed of more than $11,375 of waste for free.

“We’ve made substantial progress in the past year to clean up Murray County, but we’ve still got a long way to go” Pittman said. “We live in a beautiful area of the country and we should be good stewards of our environment. Amnesty Day gives every resident the opportunity to demonstrate pride in their community by cleaning up eyesores and illegal dumps.”

Landfill Superintendent Chris Johnson said Santek personnel will be on hand to help residents with any special disposal needs. He said Amnesty Day is a hectic-but-rewarding day.

“We just ask residents to be patient as traffic can be heavy at times,” Johnson said. “We’ll do our best to get everyone in and out of the landfill in a safe and quick manner.”
