Murray County Sole Commissioner Brittany Pittman made three appointments to the Murray County Personnel Board during the regular monthly held Tuesday morning, Joe Harrison, Daphne Winkler and Christi Sparks. Pittman also appointed Nathan Leonard to the Murray County Hospital Authority.

Pittman approved $10,030 to Pyrotecnico for the annual fireworks display to be held at the rec center. That will be held on July 6 with a rain date of July 7. For vendor booth information call the rec center and ask for LaRhonda.

Pittman also approved a resolution to transfer the duty to collect “Recording Intangible Tax” from the Murray County Tax Commissioner to the Murray County Clerk of Superior Court.

“This will just speed up the efficiency of that process,” Pittman said. “They are recorded at the clerk’s office and then they have to come across the street to pay, so this is just going to make that process more efficient.”

Pittman said finances are looking better for the county.

“We are in a better cash position than we were this time lastyear,” Pittman said. “We’re in a positive position of $411,000 compared to May of 2012...so we’ve seen an improvement there.”

She also remarked on the unemployment rate for Murray County.

“In February it was 11.7,” Pittman said. “In April it was 11 percent, and it actually got down to nine point nine...it’s always nice to see a positive trend.”

Brian Dunn requested a rezoning of property from SR and HC to AG located Hooker Road, 35.73 acres that included 13.41 zoned HC, 12.82 acres zoned SR and 9.50 acres zoned SR. Three residents were against rezoning for the purpose of building more chicken houses. A motion was made and approved to rezone the tract that has chicken houses on it and leave the other tracts SR.

Earnest Mosess requested the rezoning of 3.26 acres located in land lot 126 district 9 of Murray County from SR to RR to place a mobile home on the tract for his son. The request was approved.

Kathleen Eubanks-Crawford requested the rezonong of 13.50 acres in land lot 93 district 25 of Murray County from SR to AG to have a couple of steers for slaughter on the property in addition to the horses she has on the property. The property is already grandfathereed in as a Mini Horse Farm and pasture space is limited according to Dick Barnes. A neighbor was present at the meeting and said he would not object to a conditional use but would rather not see a rezoning. A Conditional use was granted.

The Murray County rec department is hosting three tournaments this year which will bring money into the county. Two district tournaments will be hosted and one state tournament which is expected to bring in 30 teams the same weekend as the fireworks is scheduled.
